Frequently Asked Questions

Question What areas do you serve?
Answer Our general service area is Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts, but we will travel anywhere in Massachusetts to service families in need.
Question What are your fees and what does that price include?
Answer Our fee is $2,518.00 which includes the following services:
Professional Services $   1033.00
Removal from place of death $   370.00
Cremation Container, pouch & necessary chemicals $   295.00
Sheltering of deceased $   295.00
Trip to crematory $   200.00
Crematory Fee $   250.00
Medical Examiner's Fee $     75.00
Total $2,518.00
Question Are there any additional charges not listed above?
Answer Yes. Most families wish to have a paid notice placed in local papers as well as certified copies of the death certificate. The charges vary with each newspaper for notices and for each town for certified copies. Some towns also charge for a cremation permit. There is also a $125 courier fee to obtain the death certificate from the doctor, if there is not a signed death certificate available at the place of death. Any cash advances we make on your behalf are added to the above charges.
Question Is payment required at time of service?
Answer We require you pay the Medical Examiner's Fee and the Crematory Fee at time of need. We appreciate payment of the balance at that time, but we are willing to accommodate those families who cannot do so. We recognize all major credit cards and can make arrangements for financing if you wish.
Question Is embalming required?
Answer If you utilize our direct cremation service and there is no viewing of the deceased, embalming is not required.
Question What about delivery of ashes after cremation ?
Answer Included in our transportation fee to the crematory is our returning to pick up the cremains and bring them back to our facility. At that time we will notify you and you may pick them up or we will deliver them to you.
Question Does the crematory provide an urn?
Answer No. The cremated remains are returned in a temporary container constructed of cardboard. Permanent urns may be purchased at our facility.
Question Is payment in advance of need allowed?
Answer Yes. This can be arranged through our advanced planning counselor. We can send you additional information if you wish.
Question Do you charge additional fees for extra mileage when a death occurs somewhere other than Bourne or Sandwich?
Answer There is a charge of $2.50 per mile for transportation beyond 20 miles of the above areas.
Question Is a casket required for direct cremation?
Answer No. Unless there are calling hours or services, with the body present, then a casket is superfluous. You are required, by the crematory to utilize a ridged container for handling purposes. Our Cremation Containers are manufactured to our specifications. They have wood bottoms and cardboard tops and are the same size as an inexpensive casket. They are used for no other purpose by our company except cremation.
Question Where the services you provide are for direct cremation only, do you offer any other assistance in guiding us through this difficult time?
Answer We have several cremation options available and are a full service funeral home. We will assist with placing newspaper notices and obtaining certified copies of the death certificate. For additional services, rites or ceremonies there may be additional charges, which can be found on the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home's General Price List.
Question What crematory do you utilize for your cremation service?
Answer We use Woodlawn-North Purchase Crematory, located in Attleboro, Massachusetts. We have found them to be the most reliable and professional.
